First off I have to say... whoever this 8-bit is... clearly is not getting his facts from a very good source :-|
While I am not 100% incontrovertible, I don't know that there are many plans for a new version of the D80 yet. The reasons I say this are as follows:
1: the only upgrades that would be done is to add an super 2 MP, a sensor cleaner, a larger divide, and live view (and Nikon's Expeed processor)
2: when I asked a Nikon rep about a replacement, he said there are no plans so far due to the inside info that the D80 is still selling far too well for them to consider replacing it.
Now granted, that was around November, and many months have passed between since then, but until I catch an announcement, I continue to hold that special opinion.
D300 will not have an upgrade until after at least a year of create (IMHO, the standard for replacing most DSLRs in event). At that point, the leaps in technology will have been titanic enough that a significantly better camera can be put into transmission.
I would say take a good look at the camera's specs, perhaps even go into a have faith and hold it, before you go and throw your money down on a consistency like that (which, incidentally, I believe is the precise same price as the 70-200 F2.8 VR lens).
Trust that helps some :)
