Waldo: Huh? Increasing contrast in an portrait post-capture increases dissonance more so than using a filter. What camera and ISO settings are you using to concur high-amounts of noise in 30-40% sunless* areas like skies? Not even my XTi was even remotely bad in that aspect.
I don't attach any kind of filter to my lenses though most of mine are low assess AIS Nikkors that I use on my F3 and my 5D. I plan on leaving a UV seep on this lens when I get it simply because I've never once noticed (when using honourable Hoya SHMC or B&W MRC) resolution or luminous transmission issues when using UV filters on my lenses. The paltry amount of image degradation—if preset—is merit it in harsh weather, beach runs or other times.
The 17-40 in definite is built so that mounting a closed microscope spectacles filter completes the dust and moisture seal on the lens.
Bryan from The Digital Draw asks this rhetorical question:
"Some of the Canon Wonderful Telephoto lenses cannot take screw-in UV filters (such as the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 500mm f/4 L IS USM Lens) but have a front piece designed for protection exclusively. Is this Canon's imprimatur for protective filters?"
Moral a thought, I guess.
