I don't attach any kind of filter to my lenses though most of mine are low premium AIS Nikkors that I use on my F3 and my 5D. I plan on leaving a UV refine on this lens when I get it simply because I've never once noticed (when using fair Hoya SHMC or B&W MRC) resolution or disembark transmission issues when using UV filters on my lenses. The pygmy amount of image degradation—if preset—is merit it in harsh weather, beach runs or other times.
The 17-40 in precisely is built so that mounting a closed lens filter completes the dust and moisture seal on the lens.

"Some of the Canon Wonderful Telephoto lenses cannot take screw-in UV filters (such as the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 500mm f/4 L IS USM Lens) but have a front essentials designed for protection exclusively. Is this Canon's okay for protective filters?"
